If you want to live frugally, head South or Southwest, according to Kiplinger's latest annual list of cheapest U.S. cities to live. 

Texas, known for its affordable housing, had the most cities in the Top 10 list.

Kiplinger compiled its list by factoring in living expenses of metro areas, including the costs of housing, utilities, transportation, groceries, health care, and more. 

The top five most affordable places making its list:

 

1. Harlingen, Texas

Average home price: $229,558

Median household income: $34,748

 

2. Memphis, Tenn.

Average home price: $180,375

Median household income: $36,473

 

3. McAllen, Texas

Average home price: $178,000

Median household income: $39,547

 

4. Fayetteville, Ark.

Average home price: $228,200

Median household income: $37,113

 

5. Temple, Texas

Average home price: $206,602

Median household income: $47,240
