Some Tips for Painting with a Happy Ending

1.  Paint type - latex is your DIY dream because it dries quickly and washes with soap and water. Oil base dries slowly, requires a mineral spirit or turpentine for clean up - but hardens into a strong finish. Oil base tends to be the paint of choice for cabinetry and high moisture areas.2. Sheen - flat and low luster give a rougher surface that can disguise flaws. Glossier finishes can highlight imperfections but also form a smoother, wear resistant surface that is easier to wipe clean.3. Color - Paint chip samples will not do a paint color justice. Get a sample pot and apply a couple coats to a 3 foot square foam board.  Move the squares around the room at different times of day in different light.4.  Quality over price - Cheap paint does not cover as well, may not adhere to some surfaces and don't wear well.  You will ultimately save money by spending more up front.5. College grad is back, Grandma is moving in...............  three generations under one roof.  There was a 10.5% increase in this type situation between 2007 and 2009.  A 2012 survey found that 32% of adult children expect to eventually share their house with a parent. This type situation is quite common in other cultures, such as Asian and Latino.  The 65+ puplation is expected to double by 2060 and 61% of Americans aged 25-34 already know families who have parents who have moved in with children. This could be seen as an idyllic world of built-in child care, elder care and 3 square meals.  A way to avoid isolation in older age and pooling finances.Boomerangs, the young adults moving back in with parents are paying rent and helping with household expenses.Long term care costs along with the quality of care is a huge factor in bringing elderly parents or grandparents back into the home.Builders and remodelers are now gearing up to support this trend.  Many are offering 2 master suites,…See More

The American Dream

They call home ownership "the American Dream"  - so if you are trying to sell your home, be sure to play up to your buyers aspirations.  Here are some interesting thoughts from Realtor Magazine:Create vignettes:  Set a scene and define how that space is used by perhaps displaying a chess set, a deck of cards or poker game in progress in a basement rec room.  Do you have an exercise room - how about having some water bottles and towels ready?  The kitchen could have an open cookbook and some ingredients sitting ready to go.  An open book with reading glasses on the bed?Go big:  Use supersized centerpieces on a kitchen counter or dining room table.  If your dining room with sit 12 - set it for twelve to show off it's entertaining potential - always being mindful of scale.  If you have a huge great room or rec…See More

Sellers Market - it's official

The IBJ (Indianapolis Business Journal) said it in big print today.Homes in the most desirable neighorhoods are selling furiously, often in a matter of days.  Please note this is NOT all inclusive for all areas and neighborhoods. The supply of homes has shrunk from 10 months (in 2009) to only 5 months across the Indy area. A dwindling number of owners putting homes up for sale is considered to be the catalyst. We are hearing similar stories across the nation, with some really crazy stories on some of the Coastal states.Across all price ranges throughout the 9 county doughnut (Marion County and all those encircling), inventory has fallen about 15%.  In SOME areas this has led to full price offers and even multiple offers.  I'm sure many of you are saying, "why didn't that happen to us".This situation is helping to drive a gain in home values.  Nothing crazy like some of those infamous bubble areas - but within reason and manageability. We survived a few years of very sad real estate…See More

Some small changes that might help with back pain, blood pressure and allergies....

I came across these recommendations in the latest AARP magazine ( I KNOW I'm dating myself now...) and thought they were worth sharing.Adjust your rearview mirror - tilt it up a little and it forces you to sit up straigher in order to see behind you. This can lead to less back and neck pain.  Also - if you are driving for hours, stop every couple hours to stand and stretch.  Remember your mom telling you to sit up straight?  Well, now it's all making sense.Do you cross your legs when you sit down? Did you know that crossed legs are bad for your blood pressure?  Particularly if you are diabetic or already have high blood pressure issues. Crossing at the ankles is ok and seems to have no effect  - it's the knee crossing you have to watch.  It is such a habit for me, I have to undo my legs constantly throughout the day.Where is your computer screen? You should always be an arms…See More

That State of the State Address - 2013 by Governor Mike Pence

I am honored to stand before you today as governor of all the people of Indiana and I know that, together, we will write the next great chapter of Indiana history.Thank you for that warm welcome. To my colleagues gathered here I say, my remarks will not be as brief as last week’s inaugural address, but your feet will be warmer!Article V, of the Constitution of the State of Indiana provides that the Governor shall “give to the General Assembly information touching the condition of the State, and recommend such measures as he shall judge to be expedient.”In discharging that duty, I come before you to proclaim that the state of our state is strong and growing stronger because we have good government and because we serve a great people. If we will remain bold, confident and optimistic, I am positive we can lead our state from good to great.Hoosiers owe a debt of gratitude to all the leaders gathered in this room. Because of your service in the recent past, our state has become the fiscal…See More
